The PH5 lamp, designed in 1958 by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, was created to solve a problem most lamps ignored: glare. As light bulbs became brighter in the mid-20th century, homes were filled with harsh, blinding light, because fixtures were designed to hold bulbs, not control light. Henningsen had been studying this issue since 1926 with his PH system, drawing inspiration from stacked cups, saucers, and bowls, shapes that naturally catch and redirect light. The PH5 uses layered shades to hide the bulb completely, reflect light downward and outward, and subtly correct its color so it feels warm and comfortable rather than sharp.

Meet the Makers Behind the Straps

Each strap in the Illuminating Traditions collection is handwoven by the Wayuu, an Indigenous community from La Guajira, Colombia. Living in one of the harshest desert climates in South America, the Wayuu have built a rich, matriarchal society where tradition is passed down through generations, especially through weaving.

In Wayuu culture, it is the women; mothers, grandmothers, and daughters who weave. The straps, originally part of their iconic mochilas (bags), are more than decorative. They are visual stories. Each pattern, or kanaasü, holds deep symbolic meaning, passed down orally and visually: geometric maps of nature, dreams, and beliefs. The colors reflect personality, emotion, and sometimes, family identity.

Today, many Wayuu artisans face systemic poverty, water scarcity, and exploitation in local markets. Their work is often underpaid, undervalued, or sold without context, stripped of the culture it represents.

With Illuminating Traditions, we want to change that.
By integrating Wayuu straps into modern lighting design, our goal is to give their craft global visibility and to ensure fair compensation, and investment back into their communities.

Because design should be human.
And beauty should be a bridge.

Wondering what it was like to exhibit at Milan Design Week? Stay tuned for a backstage experience. 😂

Day 1 was a rollercoaster of emotions. After walking for like an hour with my suitcases I got to the gallery, met everyone and spent the day setting up. One of my talented friends @studiomadeleinescholtes even lost her project “ Lost and found” (the name really live up to the experience😂)But at the end, everything worked out!

Day 1 was a rollercoaster of emotions. After walking for like an hour with my suitcases I got to the gallery, met everyone and spent the day setting up. One of my talented friends @studiomadeleinescholtes even lost her project “ Lost and found” (the name really live up to the experience😂)But at the end, everything worked out!

Because, if you’re stubborn enough, you can make your dreams come true. A small throw back to Milan Design Week where I had the chance to exhibit FIORE with @isola.design . If I would tell my past self I would be showcasing my work in one of the most important design fairs I would have not believed it. Funny enough what I thought was making it, is just the beginning.
